So this all started with a hike in Maine and friends who moved here from out of town. I did my first hard hike in 2006 on a church organized hike up Mt. Katahdin, the highest mountain in Maine. It was an amazing experience and got me hooked!!
While, one thing led to another and, all of a sudden, hiking has become my favorite warm weather way to get outside and enjoy New England. So, I start buying some books and start exploring. This causes me to realize that you really don’t need to drive hours to get a good hike in and that there are lots of great places just in Greater Boston alone (let alone the rest of Massachusetts) that are ripe for exploration if you have part of a day and the desire to get outside. So after all that I’ve had a few years where I’ve been determined to check out as many new places as I can in my free time.
The I had another observation: that lots of people move into the area and are always looking for something to do. Many of them don’t really explore all that far from home and often end up doing the same things all of the time. I think part of that is just going back to your favorite places and part of that is the difficulty of planning daytrips on extremely short notice. I also saw that between my knowledge and a couple friends who have lived here a long time that we often come up with ideas for trips to great places that people really enjoy and allow them to enjoy a nice day away from home without the hassle of a long journey.
You’d also have to be pretty disconnected from the world (or at least our part of it) not to notice that our economy is pretty awful at the moment. Flat wages, expensive gas, inflation and all the other markers of tough times. One of the big things in tough economic times that you see is people getting far more stressed out and cutting back on activities that help them deal with a tough economy and the stress that tough times bring on. I’m hoping that this website will allow many people to discover some great places closer to home that they can enjoy and feel like they’ve gotten away at even if they can’t afford the hotel night, flight or other traditional things that go with a vacation.
People living in any given area tend to take what they have nearby for granted and hopefully this website will help people better enjoy where they live. Thousands of people come to New England as tourists every year whether for the amazing seashore, fall foliage, historic towns and urban centers or a wide variety of other things that play a huge role in driving our regional economy and making this part of the country such a great place to live!
The goal of this website is to help people branch out and try new day trips and to introduce them to as many great places near where they live as I can. Since I grew up and still live near Boston that’s where I’m starting this site. I’m going to start with my favorites and branch out from there. With gas prices skyrocketing it’s nice to know that there are lots of great places nearby to go and enjoy yourself without emptying your wallet to get there and back.
I hope you enjoy what you see and come back often as I hope to get lots of information and updates into it for your enjoyment and get out and enjoy the many awesome attractions that we’re lucky to have nearby. Go out, have fun and make the most of where you live!
Happy Travels!
